Survey Supply and Verification
Orchid Haze is responsible for developing comprehensive geophysical survey specifications. These are aimed at detecting unexploded ordnance (UXO) items identified during the desktop study phase.
The survey design predominantly utilises high-resolution side scan sonar and magnetometry or gradiometry, ensuring effective identification of threats and supporting certification that safety has been reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).
The benefits
-
Extensive experience has been gained from more than 50 offshore projects, covering both the design and validation of UXO surveys. Survey specifications are directly informed by UXO Desktop Study (DTS) findings and are verified for their effectiveness in threat detection, which ensures a consistent approach to risk management.
-
Deployment of survey instruments is managed to prevent interference between different platforms, maintaining data quality. The selection of equipment is carefully matched to resolution requirements, enabling accurate detection and categorisation of UXO items.
Survey Verification Process
In line with best practice for UXO risk management as outlined by CIRIA, it is essential for the UXO survey to undergo an independently supervised Survey Verification Test. This process, sometimes referred to as a wet-test or prove-out, serves to verify the integrity of the raw survey data and to confirm that the holistic data collection and processing approach is robust enough to identify anomalies linked to the threat spectrum of UXO. Additionally, this process underpins other key UXO risk management activities.
We are able to provide a detailed Survey Verification Test specification, which is designed to assist the geophysical survey provider in several key areas:
-
Selecting a suitable area for the placement of surrogate items to simulate UXO.
-
Benchmarking the trial methodology against the survey protocols that will be applied in subsequent UXO surveys.
-
Evaluating and establishing confidence in survey procedures, target identification, and data processing.
